One morning, we were awakened by the excited squeals of Emo Lamb, and found him lying exceptionally happy and energetic in bed, moving his arms and kicking his legs. Seeing him full of energy, I sat Emo Lamb up and he managed to remain upright for more than 20s unsupported!

Proud moment for Mama & Papa Lamb:

Watching Emo Lamb sit up this long for the first time

Ok, fine, we probably can't consider this as sitting up yet since he didn't get to the sitting position on his own, but watching this video will always bring smiles to our faces - it is still a feat to us!

Signs he is ready

This largely depends on the strength of the neck, and whether your baby wants to sit, at least based on our observations of Emo Lamb.

When Emo Lamb went to see Dr Oh at 16 weeks (and already able to raise his head quite high, and roll from back to front), doctor told us that his neck was still not strong enough and we would still need to support the back of the neck.

Basically, how she verified this was to lift Emo Lamb, who was lying on his back, to sitting position while holding only his hands, to see if his head can follow in line with his neck or will droop backward and then swing forward uncontrollably (this is also pretty much how how you can help your baby learn to sit after he can keep his head steady). Do not do this often, Dr Oh said, as this should only be carried out periodically to check on baby's progress, and baby's head should always be well supported until his neck is strong enough.

So being true Singaporeans as we were, we followed Dr Oh's instruction faithfully over the subsequent weeks, until Emo Lamb started showing his turtle power - where he tries really hard to raise his head while lying on his back!

Learning to sit

So we did the sit-up check on our own (slowly, especially the first few times), and sure enough, Emo Lamb was able to keep his head steady the whole time! Thereafter, we would help him learn to sit up in the same fashion.

In the beginning, we would only let him stay in that position for a few short seconds, but as he practised, Emo Lamb became more comfortable in the sitting position, and could keep himself propped up by resting his hands on his legs (and that was when we managed to capture this cute video, hehe).

The desire to sit is probably the most important factor that helps Emo Lamb learn, and till date, he still exhibits turtle power from time to time (perhaps we will continue to see this until he can sit up on his own). On some occasions, Emo Lamb even wants to stand (greedy learner)!

Sit up independently

Some sources say that babies may start sitting up on their own as early as 4 months, or by 7 months (according to a Chinese saying as well). We are not able to attest to that for now, since Emo Lamb still requires assistance to sit up, but we will certainly update when he does sit up on his own!
